Filipino pool player Ronnie Alcano, aka The Volcano, will give it his all to become the first billiard player in 17 years to successfully retain a world title as the former double world champion defends his billiards title at the 2008 World 8-Ball Championship today, April 18, 2008, at the Amir Billiards Club in Fujairah City, United Arab Emirates.

In 2007, Ronnie Alcano became the only second billiard player to reign as World 8-Ball and World 9-ball champion simultaneously. The first was Taiwan’s Wu Chia-ching in 2005. No pool player has successfully defended a world crown since Earl Strickland of the United States won the first two editions of the World 9-Ball Championship in 1990 and 1991.

Other Filipino pool players joining Ronnie Alcano in the eight-day billiards event include current world no.1 Dennis Orcollo, 2007 World Pool Championship runner-up Roberto Gomez and Joven Bustamante. The 2008 World 8-Ball Championship will feature 64 of the world’s best cue artists. Dennis Orcollo, aka Robocop, is coming off on his back-to-back title wins in the San Miguel Beer-Quezon City 9-Ball Championship and the Japan 9-Ball Open. And I kid you not!

Besides Ronnie Alcano and Dennis Orcollo, the other world-renowned pool players seeded in the main draw include Wu Chia-Ching, 2007 World Pool Champion Darryl Peach, reigning world 10-Ball champion Shane Van Boening, and former World Pool champions Ralf Souquet and Oliver Ortmann.

Good luck Ronnie!
