Da Daily Donkey Goes to Malu Fernandez!

Da Daily Donkey
Malu Fernandez

People Asia (June 2007)

I'll just keep this short. And sweet. A self-described jet-setter, Malu Fernandez, of People Asia wrote:
  • "The hub was in Dubai and the majority of OFWs (Overseas Filipino workers) were stationed there. The duty-free shop was overrun with Filipino workers selling cell phones and perfume. Meanwhile, I wanted to slash my wrist at the thought of being trapped in a plane with all of them. Of course, everyone in economy class was yelled at for having overweight hand-carries. Mine was 17 kg (ssshhhh!). That was all makeup and accessories I would never risk losing if my luggage ended up in the middle of the Sahara Desert."

  • "While I was on the plane (where the seats were so small i had bruises on my legs), my only consolation was the entertainment on the small flat screen in front of me. But it was busted, so I heaved a sigh, popped my sleeping pills and dozed off to the sounds of gum chewing and endless yellowing of "HOY! Kumusta ka na? At taga saan ka? Domestic helper ka rin ba?" Translation: "Hey there? Where are you from? Are you a domestic helper as well?" I thought I had died and God had sent me to my very own private hell.
I was supposed to ponder on this yesterday and express my views. However, my hectic schedule and unexpected visit of one of my bosses from Wall Street did not allow me to do so. Friends, colleagues, and even strangers have been urging me to write something about her and call her names too. Names such as:
  • pig
  • baboy
  • lechon baboy
  • boy piglet
  • Dely Atay-atayan
  • Lola Potsay
  • Dabyana
  • matrona
  • pigrolac
  • T.H. (Trying Hard)
  • social climber
  • Aling Mila
  • Mang Tomas
  • naaagnas ang mukha
  • boy make-up
  • B-Meg
  • Ms. Piggy
  • Pigsa ng tinubuan ng kamay at paa
  • etc. etc. etc.
I politely refused to give in to their requests. Let us all be civilized about this. After all, there is the adage, "Blood is thicker than water". And admit it or not, Ms. Malu Fernandez is still Filipino. Love it or hate it, those are the facts. Which, incidentally, brings me to my views my friends:

And who do you think you are Malu Fernandez?
SHAME ON YOU! MAHIYA KA NAMAN!

Who gave you the right to belittle our kababayans? My kababayans? Who gave you the right to say such things? And who made you god? You are not just ugly...you are despicable! Look at yourself, you dumb and sick $#%^&! And you wanted to slash your wrist instead of spending the flight with our kababayans? YOU SHOULD HAVE DONE SO! You could have saved the plane a lot of jetfuel or your seat could have been given to another passenger!

The people you are desperately trying to put down, i.e., our OFWs, are the very ones who give this beautiful country a sense of hope and pride in these trying times. These OFWs, the ones you are so ill to be at eased with, are our Filipino brothers and sisters who make the ultimate sacrifice of working in another country to send their children to school and make a good life for themselves - hoping and wishing that someday, when all is said and done, that they did the right thing for their sons and daughters. Our OFWs work abroad not because they really want to, but because they have to.

Hey Fernandez!
You should learn how to count your blessings instead of finding fault in others or dampening other people's spirits. Let me just say it again, "Look at yourself, you dumb and sick #$%^#!" I know people like you. I've met a number of your kind. You are the type who easily fall to pieces, who easily reach a breaking point, who have more sorrow and anger than happiness and joy, and who harbor ill-will. You are the kind who do not have a sense of proportion, not one bit! You think the unthinkable! The unimaginable! All nonsensical!

And lest I forget, here's more of what Malu Fernandez wrote:
  • "On my way back, I had to bravely take the economy flight once more. This time I had already resigned myself to being trapped like a sardine in a sardine can with all these OFWs smelling of AXE and Charlie cologne while my Jo Malone evaporated into thin air."

Did I get it right? You had to "bravely" take the economy flight once more? I think it's the other way around, Fernandez: "The economy flight was brave enough to take you once more!"
With all your pretentions and what-have-you's, I honestly and sincerely feel that YOU ARE DOWN IN THE DUMPS! After all the 17 kg of makeup and personal effects you put on, and your efforts to promote yourself as fierce and fabulous, there's no denying the fact: YOU ARE ONE BIG LOSER! And I kid you not!

that's why it's called "economy" class.

if you think so highly of yourself why not book a business class seat or better yet, a first class seat? if an economy class is all you can afford, then you have no right to complain ;-)

THE ANiTOKiD said...

The fierce and fabulous, the jet-setter, on economy class! Hernandez is all glass. And I kid you not!

lateralus said...

di ka naman masyadong galit, ano? Haha

You gotta wonder what she was trying to prove by writing in that tone. hehe

How dare she say all those things? As if naman maganda siya! Puweh! Assuming she is rich, she still does not have the right to say those things to the OFWs!

THE ANiTOKiD said...

@Lateralus: No, calm pa nga ako kabayan. I also thought about it, why she had to write what she wrote. It doesn't take a genius to know that she is a fake. Fierce and fabulous daw? What's next? Ms. Universe?

@Richard: gustong-gusto ko yung ang taba-taba niya at tiba tiba ako line...:)

Sobra nman kayo mag-comment..

There might be some reasons kung bakit siya ganun..

a) Nagalit siya kasi di kaya ng economy seat yung mala-Titanic niyang katawan.
b) Maybe, wala na siyang money for first class seat kasi napunta ng lahat sa mukha niya at katawan.
c) Di niya feel na pinoy (By the way, lalake ba ito?)siya.
e) All of the above.

Bwehehhee..

Keber kung Karl Malone este Jo Malone yung perfume mo.. Eh! Ang baho naman ng ugali mo..

Mabuhay ang mga OFW!!!!

Simply put, I love the comment! Answer ko? ALL OF THE ABOVE! And you got another thing right, my friend - MABUHAY ANG MGA OFW! And I kid you not!

Hehe.

What an arrogant, insensitive person whatever-her-name-is ano.

THE ANiTOKiD said...

@Bill: I guess common sense is not common after all in Ms. Hernandez.

THE ANiTOKiD said...

@Novice Blogger: Eh kahit gawin sisig yan, di ko kakainin yan. And you can take that to the bank bro!

I've written my reaction just recently, and my plan for this issue. 4 articles in all.

I plan to do some blog-hopping later this week, when time permits. I suggest everyone else does as well. Inform everyone about the issue.

A collective voice on this issue will have the best result. Hopefully, the resignation or Firing of Malu Fernandez.

THE ANiTOKiD said...

@Nick: At this point in time, I think an apology needs to be said by Malu Fernandez.

dessa girl said...

this girl is really psychotic. she should not be allowed in philippine soil.

THE ANiTOKiD said...

@Dessa girl: She shouldn't be allowed anywhere at all!

I AM SAM said...

Malu... sounds like maru... Anyway, it took me days to swallow everything. I guess she is that big to be swallowed. Malu's actions show how poor majority of the Filipinos are. The people she criticized are coming from poor families. And she was just trying to show the gap. I think we have to thank her because she showed how poor people are treated by most rich people. This also happened here and we are not doing anything about it. It's sad that only blogger raised this issue. But do not hope for a reply from the government. Because the government acts like Malu and we here are the OFWs.

THE ANiTOKiD said...

Very interesting thoughts, Sam. And I have to admit, you made me think and ponder again...

Okay, I wrote the infamous “Know Your Jologs” series, but it was written in jest and in a satiric manner. What she wrote was condescending and very distasteful. I would never ever attempt to write in such a distasteful way. She calls it wit. I find it tasteless.

Also, if BRYANBOY reacts to Malu Fernandez, that means she’s gone too far.

THE ANiTOKiD said...

You got that right, Ade! I browsed your site kabayan! Found the post on the Korean kids interesting. First time I've heard of such! With regards to BryanBoy, will still have to check that post out.

THE ANiTOKiD said...

Hi Jocelyn!

Kabayan, when I first did this post, all I wanted to do was give Malu Fernandez a piece of my mind. To make her realize her mistakes, and to apologize to the OFW community and to the country as a whole.

Your comments moved me, kabayan. I never thought that my post would touch the hearts of our kababayans all over the world, especially there in the Middle East. It was not my intention. All I wanted was Malu's apology. Maraming salamat kabayan. Your comments make me realize that maybe, just maybe, I am doing something right with what I'm doing. It has become a passion, sis.

Maraming, maraming, maraming, maraming salamat kapatid! Sa totoo lang, I think there's something in my throat. And I think my eyes are about to shed something. Tsk. No drama whatsoever. Your comments moved me talaga. Maraming salamat Jocelyn. Kabayan. Kapatid.

Mabuhay ang ating mga OFW's! Mabuhay ang Filipino!

Jocelyn: When I first read your post, maiyak-iyak ako. Mabuhay kayong lahat. You are in my book one of the many heroes of this country.

AnitoKid: Thanks for your post. My friend sent me a link to your site at nagmadali akong mag-post sa blog ko. What you did by posting is open people's eyes to this extreme elitism. Kudos!

I'm glad you liked it Cybele! Maraming salamat sa mga binitiwan mong salita. Nakaka-inspire tuloy. And I kid you not! :)

Kabayans in Doha said...

I am in Doha with my family and everytime meron kaming nakikilalang kabayans here, we are always happy and proud to meet them. They are symbols of our own hardwork, perseverance and triumph. We are all OFWs... an apology will be good but putting her to jail is justice. She insulted millions of OFWs around the world.
Apart from that, Malu and the editors she works with abused their position as media.

THE ANiTOKiD said...

I was touched with your views, kabayan. After all that was said and done, everyone wants justice for what malu fernandez did. She and her editors did not just hurt a lot of people, they ridiculed an entire nation.

Please give my regards to our kababayans there! You and every single Filipino there are the modern day heroes of our beautiful country! And I kid you not!

Let us not dignify the article of this idiot relative to her article degrading OFW’s around the world. Obviously there is no help for everyone reading it, instead of a stressful feeling. Practically she doesn’t give a rat’s ass on OFW’s, then why should we on her? It’s just sad that a supposed educated being thought as low—life as her. Let’s ignore her because she doesn’t deserve a rat’s ass equally.

i was shocked when i read her article b4. as a filipino student studying BA public health here in germany, i'm fed with what other nationals say here: the philippines = third world or developing country. sa mga lessons namin naririnig ko yan palagi. i didn't expect na pati kapwa natin pinoy magdi-discriminate din sa atin? if i were her lola i'd wash her mouth with perla tapos bleach ko para naman malinis na xa mgsalita sa kapwa nya filipino. i pity her, 'coz the people born with a silverspoon doesn't flaunt their riches they'd rather go incognito--as the saying goes:"Do not wrong or hate your neighbor for it is not he that you wrong but yourself"(pima). mabuhay tayo! lalo na kayo kabayan (OFWs)!! =)

@Mark: Justice is being served, my kabayan. She apologized on national tv and "resigned" daw from her posts at Manila Standard and People Asia. I don't think she resigned....:)

@Anonymous: Zubiri as malu fernandez's favorite nephew? The question is: is malu fernandez zubiri's fave aunt? o, di ba?

@Jem16: Napahanga mo ako kabayan sa iyong komento! I will always go back to your thoughts for inspiration.

Mabuhay ka kabayan!

@Rodolfo: You got your wish, kabayan! Galing ah! And thanks for spreading the word!

Mabuhay OFWs! Mabuhay Filipino!

@Jade: Very well said kabayan! And guess what? She just apologized on national TV and "resigned" from her posts at Manila Standard and People Asia!

@gani of Dubai: Sigurado kayang nag resign or force to resign? kasi malaking impact sa Manila standard at People Asia. OFW ang bumubuhay sa bansang Pilipinas at Malu should know na kumikita tayo ng marangal. We humbly request the good office of President Arroyo to please look onto this matter and the Emirates Airlines should file a case against Malu, siniraan niya ang one of the leading airlines.

@Filipinos all over are trying to verify and confirm it kabayan.

Sa totoo lang, she had a chance to apologize for what she did. Ang kaso, her first apology (published in the Manila Standard) was not even close to an apology. Personally, I think it was nonsensical. And now, Filipinos are asking for her head. tsk tsk tsk. And I kid you not!

Malu Fernadez, you won't fit in those seats in the economy class because you're a fatso. Next time, take the business class (if you can afford it). If you don't know already, in spite of the rampant corruption in our country, the OFWs keep the economy of the Philippines growing. There is a construction boom because more than half of the investors are OFWs. Malls have mushroomed throughout the country because of the patronage of OFWs. What about you? What do you contribute?

@Anonymous: She has resigned from her posts at Manila Standard and People Asia, my friend.

“Responses to an OFW-Basher”
By Jerick T Aguilar

After shamelessly writing about her summer trip to Boracay and Greece in the June 2007 issue of People Asia magazine, this columnist was found guilty of character assassination of our overseas Filipino domestic helpers regardless of the fact that they have never wronged her, except – in her opinion – for being on the same economy flight that everyone is entitled to. As a writer and traveler myself, please find below my notes on some of the things she wrote. I may also be guilty of character assassination but at least mine is not baseless and I think of this more as defending our fellow “kababayans” working abroad.

“But I was too ashamed to ditch my friends and forego the huge amount I already paid for my share of the villa.” – Outright pretentious! People rent and share villas in Boracay to save on expensive hotel charges per night so writing that she paid a “huge amount” is plainly preposterous!

“Meanwhile, when all of this was going on, I was on the cell phone …” – Proper English writing uses the conjunction “while” when it is followed by the progressive (this case in the past) and interrupted by the simple tense – so “while all of this was going on, I was …” – I thought a columnist for a magazine (and newspaper) would have a knowledge of English much better than a domestic helper’s!

“Ron is my travel buddy … so between his schedule and mine, the logistics are a nightmare.” – “Logistics” is a non-countable noun and, hence, is always followed by a singular verb – so “… logistics is a nightmare.” Ditto!

“Emirates had won best economy class and some award.” – “Award”, on the other hand, is a countable noun (i.e. it has singular and plural forms) and the modifier “some” means more than one – so “… some awards.” – My, oh my! Our housemaid even knows better English than her!

“I forgot that the hub was in Dubai and the majority of OFWs (overseas Filipino workers) were stationed there.” – Duh?!? Majority of OFWs are in Saudi Arabia, unless she doesn’t know what the word “majority” means. And another duh! To be “stationed” means to stay in one place – it’s obvious that our OFWs don’t just stay there, she was with them while traveling back to the Philippines.

“Meanwhile, I wanted to slash my wrist at the thought of being trapped in a plane with all of them.” – Okay, a plane is a form of public transportation so the preposition “on” instead of “in” is used (e.g. on a bus, on a train, etc.) so “… trapped on a plane …” Yeah, she should’ve slashed her wrist in order to prevent writing more grammatical mistakes! (I hope her readers do not know that she is Filipino! Nakakahiya kung ganoon! – Sorry but the English translation does not suffice!)

“… I would never risk losing if my luggage ended up in the middle of the Sahara desert.” – Her plane took off from Dubai then landed in Athens where the flight plan is northeast of the Sahara desert, unless there was a stopover in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire. Now is she really a traveler or was it just her first time to travel?…

“… the seats were so small I had bruises …” – Okay, didn’t she mention that Emirates had won best economy class? So I wonder if the seats were so small or she was simply so big?

“Domestic helper ka rin ba?” – She wrote this question as if she overheard it while dozing off. I bet she was actually asked this question. I mean, I would whether or not I were a domestic helper given her fashion sense in the pictures (not at all to demean the clothing style of our domestic helpers but one cannot really differentiate hers from theirs).

“… the weather report on CNN … was wrong because it was still winter.” – Hold on, summer in the Philippines from April to June is already spring in Europe. And even if the European winter in March extended till April, Greece is in the Mediterranean so it would’ve already been warm by then. So was it really a cold winter while she was there or she just wanted to impress her readers by mentioning the word “throw” as a noun and not as the usual verb (and by wearing it to look less fat in the picture)?

“I adamantly wanted to go to Santorini … but due to time constraints, we were unable to go.” – Talk about being pretentious again! She intentionally forgot to mention “money” as another constraint! Didn’t she just write that she had to fly economy?

“I guess God was watching out for us.” – And now she thinks God was after writing that God had sent her to her own private hell being on a plane with “those domestics”. One of the rules of journalism is to be consistent (aside from having perfect English, of course!) so I guess she is the exception.

“This time I had already resigned myself to being trapped like a sardine in a sardine can …” – Another cardinal rule of journalism is to avoid redundancy so a “fish” in a sardine can sounds much better. I don’t think she’s a traveler, I don’t think she’s a journalist either… What is she then? An abomination?

“… with all these OFWs smelling of AXE and Charlie cologne while my Jo Malone evaporated into thin air.” – Interesting how she made reference to Jo Malone in which a perfume wardrobe costs more than $1,000 yet she had to take the economy flight to Athens and back…

“But for a couple of weeks, I had the great escape …” – What was that again? A “couple of weeks” when she wrote beforehand of her “time constraints”? Greece is not China so a visit to Santorini from Athens can be squeezed even within a week of staying there. And before that, she wrote “Pick a country!” as if she can go anywhere she wants to. But she ended up saving on her plane ticket only to be “trapped” with OFWs and “smelling like air freshener”. She is the height of pretension indeed!

Three things to my “supposed” fellow writer and traveler – first off, if you have to write something in English, do not forget the simple rules of grammar so you do not cause intellectual harm to the people reading your article. Secondly, if you do not have money to pay for a business class fare, then don’t complain if you are surrounded by OFWs who can only afford an economy flight. As a final note, I suggest you thank these OFWs instead of demeaning them! If it weren’t for the billions of foreign currency remittances that our country regularly receives from them, the instability and depreciation of the peso-dollar exchange rate would’ve prohibited you from traveling to Greece in the first place (and buying that Jo Malone, assuming you already did)!
