Batanes! Jeffrey Elliott's Trip to Batanes in Pictures!

In the first quarter of 2010, my good friend, Jeffrey Elliott, aka Anting-anting Jeff, had the good chance to visit Batanes, the northernmost province of the Pool Capital of the World!

Jeff made the trip to Batanes with Celine and our good friend, internationally-renowned painter Rafael "Popoy" Cusi. I was supposed to be with him but work kept me from doing so. :(

According to Jeff, 'twas an adventure of a lifetime! And I believe him!

Christening Photographs: Amariah Yannise Rellin Baptism!

Billiards buddies and fans of photography, we have another drawing with light entry at Larawan Photography!And I kid you not!

The post features some of the pictures we took from the Christening of Amariah Yannise Rellin – the youngest daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Ronald Rellin, a who’s who in the Philippine oil and gas industry.

The Christening was held at the St. Alphonsus Mary de Liguori Parish, Magallanes Village, Makati City. Reception followed at the Kamayan Saisaki Dads restaurant in Glorietta, Makati.

A Birthday Wish: Nikon 70-200mm f2.8 VR Lens!

Nikon 70-200mm f2.8 VR lens for my birthday? I wish!

Have I ever written a birthday post? I don’t know. I can’t seem to remember. Maybe, I have. Maybe I have not. Yikes! Memory lapses at 28! Cough! Cough! Cough! Okay, the truth shall set me free: 38! I am now 38 years old! And a cool one, I’d love to think! ^_^

Yesterday, the kids surprised me with two of favorites – Andok’s Litson Manok and spicy potato chips for dinner! We celebrated a day ahead because I have work today. During the course of the meal, amidst the endless chattering on the day’s activities, my eldest daughter, Agi, asked, “What’s your birthday wish, Dad?”

I just smiled. Truth be told, I really don’t know what to wish for. I have a loving family. A nice and decent job, great friends (on and off the pool circuit), and health is okay (I think!). And oh! Let’s not forget my blogs and websites! I then softly said, "Another world championship for The Magician - Efren Bata Reyes - before he retires!"

The rest of the kids, i.e., Dado, Kiko and Patis, all exclaimed, "Yeah!"

Agi asked again, “Okay, Dad! But, if you could wish for anything, material that is, for yourself, what would that be, Dad?” Hmmm. Something material? And for myself? Suddenly, a thousand thoughts suddenly crossed my mind! A new car perhaps? Too expensive now! An LCD television? Nah! I rarely watch TV! A new laptop? Another hmmm. And wham! It hit me! A Nikon 70-200mm f2.8 VR lens! Now, that is what I want!

“Someday, Dad! Someday, I’m going to buy you one!” remarked Agi. “Ha! Ha! Ha! Don’t think about it, anak ko’y! It’s just a wish, remember?” I cheerfully said back.


The Nikon 70-200mm f2.8 VR lens is Nikon's best professional moderate telephoto zoom. For those not in the know, one of these (or one of its earlier siblings) is in almost every professional photographers' bag! And I kid you not!

The optics and mechanics of the Nikon 70-200mm f2.8 VR lens are superlative for everything a full-time career professional news or sports photographer would want to shoot with it, on any Nikon digital or modern film camera. Wouldn’t it be great to have when taking pictures of the Filipino greats in billiards! With such a fast lens, that would be awesome! Then again, the only reason why I do not have yet one for my Nikon D90 is the price! It’s quite expensive in my book! With all the expenses tightly bound to the kids’ education and all, getting the Nikon 70-200mm f2.8 VR lens remains a dream at this point in time.

But hey! I’m not complaining! Not one bit! My beautiful children’s education comes first! My children always come first! They are all very studious and work very hard to be at the top of their class and all! And that reason alone (and I have many reasons, mind you!) makes me the happiest dad in the world!

Thirty-eight wonderful years, with like almost half of it filled with wonderful memories with my beautiful children and loving friends! Indeed, life is good! I count my blessings! You should too!

And what about the Nikon 70-200mm f2.8 VR lens? It is still a dream! And dreams do come true. Right? I wish!

Larawan Photography: We Tell the Story!

Billiards buddies and pool players, we have just started with a new blog – Larawan Photography! As every one knows, I and one of my good friends, Jason Calubaquib, have been very busy with photography since February 2009. Larawan Photography aims to showcase some of our favorite shots and chronicle the fun we had taking 'em.

I sincerely believe that the blog is the perfect way for Larawan Photography to share with everyone some of our unforgettable shoots! After all, we don’t just take pictures. We preserve memories. And yes! We do tell the story. No more. No less.

The first post highlights some of our favorite shots taken from our first paid gig – the Christening of Sasha Castro Dy, at the Sanctuario de San Antonio in Forbes Park, Makati City, on May 24, 2009. Sasha is the granddaughter of former Isabela Governor Faustino Dy, Jr.

Jason Calubaquib Wins Portrait & Still Life Competition!

Congratulations to my one of my best friends, Jason Calubaquib, for placing 3rd in the Portrait and Still Life Competition of the second batch of the Basic Photography workshop at the Federation of Philippine Photographers Foundation, Inc. (FPPF) Art Chamber in Intramuros, Manila!

None other than the legendary photojournalist and sports photographer Ramon Vecina was on hand to judge the photo competition! And I kid you not! Also present were Prof. Joey Tañedo, Chris Malinao, Mrs. Eduviges Y. Huang - FPPF Chairperson, and Toch Arellano.

I am proud of you, Pare ko! Hanga! Galing! Mana sa akin! :) Here’s looking forward to more drawing with light activities and wins with you, bro!

Politics in Billiards & Drawing With Life: A Thousand Thoughts Rushing Through My Mind

Some people say that I own the world’s number one blog on billiards and co-own one of the most popular no-holds-barred billiards forum; that my passion for billiards is so intense; that I have a very good eye for photography; that I have a gift for writing – a gift that others call uncanny because I can write almost about anything, and everything, under the sun, and in a snap; that I have garnered billiards trophies and medals, and established pool records that would be the envy of some; that I am lucky and a man blessed; and more.

But truth be told, I sometimes wonder where all of these is taking me – whether I should continue with the ride or completely get out of it all.

The mean and cruel nature of people saddens me to a point that I do not want to continue doing the things I love anymore. Politics in billiards: Has it always been there? Or has it just resurfaced? Its emergence, or reemergence, in billiards, a sport that I love so much, and which has loved me back in more ways than one, has contributed to the negative feelings I am having right now. Such has left me thinking and guessing who my real friends are. It has also left me dumbfounded about the true intentions of people around me and those in the pool scene – selfish intentions and negative reasons that I dare not write about because such make me want to puke! And I kid you not!

An injury, call it a condition if you may, has left me unable to walk very fast or climb steps properly. It seemed not to matter in my passion, though. However, it did stop me from traveling extensively. But guess what, I have rediscovered my old love, photography. And my rediscovery of drawing with light has got me thinking that perhaps I should not look for answers - sooner or later – on such issues rushing through my mind. Why so? My first love, drawing with light, has made me realize the joys of travel and experience the warmth of people once again. It has rekindled some form of hope that someday, somehow, people will see the sport, and themselves, in a different light. A positive one.

To my photo buddies Juan Carlos “JC” Lopez, Lito “Vice” de Castro, and Jason Calubaquib, much thanks for helping me rediscover my old love. I have found my self. Again.

Photography in Baguio City, Benguet & Pangasinan Using my Nikon D40 with 18-135mm AF-S Lens!

Friends, here are some of the pictures I took in Baguio City, Benguet, and Pangasinan using my Nikon D40 camera and Nikkor 18-135mm AF-S lens.

The pictures were taken on February 1-2, 2009, which signaled the start of the Panagbenga Festival in the Summer Capital of the Philippines. With me were my photo buddies, Jason Calubaquib and Vice de Castro, my best pals on and off the billiards circuit.

Truth be told, ‘twas an unforgettable 2 days of drawing with light! And I kid you not!

Nikon D40 with AF-S Zoom-Nikkor ED 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6G: Great Pictures and All!

Nikon AF-S Zoom-Nikkor ED 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6G IF DX VR - I received a ton of emails asking the type of camera and lenses I used to take pictures during the just-concluded 9-Ball Summit of the Makati Pool Players Association held at the AMF-Puyat Superbowl, Makati City. Believe you me, I even received some high praises from pool players, buddies, fans, and readers on the pics I took at the event. Much thanks for the kind words, friends!

It may surprise everyone, but I only used one lens during the entire event – the Nikon AF-S Zoom-Nikkor ED 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6G IF DX VR. Purchased a day before the actual competition using some of my blog earnings from January 2009 – yes, you’ve read right, I actually bought the lens a day before the historic tournament :) - I paired my superzoom with my uber-favorite Nikon D40 camera and Nikon SB-400 speedlight.

My Nikon AF-S Zoom-Nikkor ED 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6G IF DX VR features 16 elements in 12 groups; 3 aspheric, and 2 ED elements. The lens integrate a manual focus override, AF-S lens focusing motor, vibration reduction, internal focus, 72mm filter size, and comes with a HB-35 hood. Weighting 1.26 pounds, it focuses to 16.5" (0.5m), and is about 100mm long from mount (160mm extended). With such specs and all, it couldn’t get better than that! Well, yes, it could if we are talking about my ultimate dream lens, i.e., the Nikon 70-200mm f/2.8 VR! :)

And just how good are the pictures I took using the My Nikon AF-S Zoom-Nikkor ED 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6G IF DX VR? Truth be told, some of the shots I took were simultaneously published in the Philippine Daily Inquirer and People’s Tonight newspapers! And I kid you not!
