Antonio Nikoy Lining is Ranked Number 1 in the World of Billiards!

Antonio Nikoy Lining GraphicHere is one great news, billiards enthusiasts and pool player friends! Filipino pool player Antonio Nikoy Lining’s impressive semifinals finish in the just-concluded 2011 Philippine Open Pool Championship propelled him as the world’s No. 1 player! And I kid you not!

According to one of my sources, no less than World Pool-Billiard Association (WPA) President Ian Anderson confirmed this exciting news during the Finals Day of the prestigious event. However, the official tabulation has not been finalized.

Nikoy unseated fellow Filipino pool player Francisco Django Bustamante, who did not see action in the competition. Truth be told, it will be the first time in Lining’s 30-year pool career that the soft-spoken, left-handed pool player from Pinamalayan, Oriental Mindoro, will take the world No. 1 spot! And that is one awesome feat!

For those not in the know, Lining plays for the Negros Billiards Stable and JSY Sports under the able management and guidance of businessman Jonathan Sy. He also coaches several pool clubs in Japan.

Congratulations Nikoy! You are numero uno! Mabuhay!

Thorsten Hohmann Wins Philippine Open Pool Championship!

Thorsten Hohmann GraphicGerman world champions Ralf Souquet and Thorsten Hohmann battled it out on the Finals Day of the 2011 Philippine Open Pool Championship at the SM Megamall Megatrade Hall in Mandaluyong City! With both pool players seeking their first title in the Pool Capital of the World, the two went toe-to-toe in a thrilling finale.

In the end, Hohmann, aka The Hitman, came up victorious and Souquet, aka The Kaiser, suffered another setback in Manila. Hohmann won against Souquet, 11-10, to capture the Philippine Open men’s championship and the $30,000 cash prize.

Truth be told, Hohmann’s victory was interesting in itself. A last-minute inclusion following the pullout of Ruslan Chinakhov of Russia, Hohmann made the most out of his campaign. He booked in a late flight, arrived in Manila midnight before the tournament, and teetered on the brink of elimination most of the way. The Hitman even missed the players’ meeting because he arrived in the Philippines midnight before the event! And I kid you not!

Congratulations Thorsten! Mabuhay!
