Mosconi Cup XV: It's Team USA vs. Team Europe Once Again!
Billiards buddies and pool players, the 15th edition of the Mosconi Cup is just around the corner and excitement is on extreme highs with both teams eager to improve the current scoreline, which stands at 10½ wins for Team USA and 3½ wins for Team Europe! *The 2006 edition ended in 12-12 draw.
The 2008 PartyPoker.com Mosconi Cup will be held at the Hilton Conference Centre in Portomaso between December 11 and 14, 2008. The billiards competition is an annual nine-ball pool tournament contested between teams representing Europe and USA since 1994. Each team will have 5 players, which will play a series of singles and doubles matches for a period of 4 days. The trophy is named after the American player Willie Mosconi and it has often been referred to as the "Ryder Cup of Pool".
The USA Team for the Malta appointment will be composed of World Cup of Pool Champions Rodney Morris and Shane van Boening, Earl Strickland, Jeremy Jones, and Johnny Archer.
Team Europe will include Mika Immonen, Neils Feijen, Ralf Souquet, Mark Gray, and Tony Drago, reputedly one of the strongest European teams contesting the Mosconi Cup in recent memory.
For those not in the know, the Portomaso challenge of the billiards event will see Alex Lely as captain of the European team and Nick Varner for Team USA. The Mosconi Cup is the only pool event in the world where the role of a team’s captain is a non-playing one! And I kid you not! Since the early days of the famed competition, each team had a captain but it was always one of the players. There was increased pressure as the event grew bigger and better. Thus, non-playing captains were introduced for the first time in Las Vegas, Nevada, in 2003.
Good luck, everyone!
