Congratulations to Filipino pool player Alex Pagulayan, aka The Lion, for winning the 2007 Negros Oriental International 9-Ball Championship at the newly-built Dumaguete Convention Center in Dumaguete City, Negros Oriental! Alex Pagulayan, who was sponsored by Puyat Sports, bagged the honors, 13-9, against Negros Billiard Stable’s Ramil Gallego, aka Bebeng.

The Lion, who comes from Cabagan, Isabela, surmounted a 2 rack deficit (2-4) via a 7-0 run to realize a 9-4 advantage in the race-to13 Negros Oriental International 9-Ball Championship. Alex Pagulayan, the 2004 World Pool Champpion, took home the $20,000 top prize of the alternate break billiards tournament, which was jointly organized by Puyat Sports and the Negros Billiard Stable. Ramil Gallego, a 5-time Japan champion, settled for the $10,000 runner-up prize. Each player also received a Nokia 7710 from businessman Julio "Jun-Jun" Sy Jr.

Highlights of the 9-ball billiards tournament:

Filipino pool legend Efren Bata Reyes, aka The Magician, led other Filipino pool players, who battled it out with their foreign counterparts, e.g., Mika Immonen, Neils Feijen, and Wu Chia Ching, in the double round knock-out system International 9-ball championship. The 9-ball pool tournament was presented by businessman Julio "Jun-Jun" Sy Jr, owner of KOPIKO 3-In-1 coffee, Altus Communication, NOKIA Philippines, San Miguel Corp., and Puyat Sports, in cooperation with Negros Oriental Governor Emilio Macias II and Negros Oriental 1st district representative Josie Limkaichiong of La Libertad. The competition serves as one of the highlights of Dumaguete City’s annual Fiesta celebrations. The Provincial Government, with the help of the private sector, acquired the rights to host the event that is also aimed at promoting the very beautiful Province of Negros Oriental, while simultaneously attracting more investors and pushing for the development of a high-level sports program. Complimenting the four-day international event is the holding of the second Sidlakang Negros Product Showcase and Artists Gallery Exhibit initiated by the Negros Oriental Tourism Council. The gallery exhibit will feature the different local products of the Province of Negros Oriental and will be participated in by local artists and producers. The pool tournament will be televised on Solar Sports on November 22-29, 2007. And I kid you not!
