Get Paid with Pay-Per-Play Media!

Pay-Per-Play Media Graphic

I was browsing the web on Internet audio advertising when I came across this interesting website - NetAudioAds Pay-Per-Play (PPP). PPP touts itself as an online media channel that plays five-second audio advertisements on websites that put the PPP code on their web pages. What is interesting is that the audio ads can only heard on web pages where the website owner has placed PPP code. Wait, there’s more! The PPP audio ads are contextually associated with the text content of any web page where the PPP code is placed!

The PPP audio advertisement is only 5 seconds in length and a website visitor will only hear one 5 (five) second ad per visit to any specific web page where the code has been inserted. The audio advertisement is only heard and not seen and requires no action whatsoever from a visitor. The visitor will only hear one audio ad for every three minutes they visit if they have already heard an audio advertisement on another page of the same website. And as of December 29, 2007, the Pay-Per-Play network has grown to over 6 million websites! Wow! Talk about popularity among advertisers!

Pay-Per-Play Media Image

So what good is this for my site? Well, besides the fact that it never sends visitors away from my site, it gives me the opportunity to earn and continue to earn from every visitor! And with over 24,000 core affiliate partners responsible for signing on 9,000,000 websites producing over 1 billion 5 second audio ad plays per month, I guess it wouldn’t hurt to try PPP!

With PPP’s plans to officially launch on February 1, 2008, now is a good time to join the community and earn as an affiliate! How so? Well, each time one refers a new affiliate, that person will earn 5% of what advertisers spend on their website! You read right, 5 percent! And on top of that, one will also earn an additional 5% on those that direct referrals bring on board! Now, that is one sweet deal! PPP is definitely worth checking out! Log on to PPP’s website and hear examples of what websites visitors may hear! Read, hear, and decide! And browse the full training materials, too! If you think you got what it takes to earn from Internet audio advertising – then this is one website you surely don’t want to miss checking out! And I kid you not!

The Predator Air Case: Coolness!

Predator Air Case GraphicA Predator Air Case? Saw an online thread discussing about such a cue case, which will be done in a bigger size. Reputedly, the 2nd generation Predator pool cue case will not be an Instroke and could be available in April 2008.

The Predator Air Case features metals around the bottom and top, which could be engraved! It also appears that the cue case does not have a top handle. How about the space devoted to accessories? Looks alright? Option/s for a special order (case larger than a 2x4) remains in the dark, friends.

From the initial looks of things, I think the Predator Air Case is just ooozing with coolness! I want one! And I kid you not!

Alex Tucker and Eric Pedrosa Square Off at the Coach's 9-Ball Tour!

9-Ball Competition GraphicCongratulations to my very good friend, Edgar Boyet Asonto, Coach of the Philippine Billiards Team, for the successful January 2008 Coach's Tour! The 9-ball competition was held at the AMF-Puyat Superbowl, Makati Cinema Square, Makati City, home of the Makati Pool Players Association (MAPPA).

9-Ball Competition ImageFilipino pool player Eric Pedrosa, a proud member of the MAPPA, is First Runner Up in the January 2008 Coach's Tour. Eric Pedrosa, one of the most feared amateurs in his area in Cavite City, is a high-profile executive at Eastern Petroleum Inc. He received a very nice glass trophy and the Php4,000 cash prize. His weapon of choice is a custom cue from The AnitoKid. Pictured with Mr. Pedrosa are Coach Boyet Asonto and and my good friend, Carlito de Castro, aka Vice, incumbent MAPPA president.

Congratulations Eric!

9-Ball Competition ImageAlex Tucker from London, England, wins another championship in the Coach's 9-Ball Tour! He received a very nice glass trophy and a minimum of Php10,000 for his excellent display of 9-ball knowledge. Just like World Pool Champion Daryl Peach, aka The Dazzler, Alex Tucker is all about focus, discipline, and determination. His weapons of choice include an Adam jump cue, a Predator BK, and a DC playing cue. He plays once a week at the AMF-Puyat Superbowl for a minimum of 5 hours straight - and all by his lonesome! Alex Tucker is one mean pocketing machine! And I kid you not!

The Ltd. Edition Brunswick Metro Cue from Brunswick Billiards

Brunswick Billiards Graphic

I played for six hours with my Limited Edition Brunswick Metro Cue at the AMF-Puyat Superbowl, Makati Cinema Square, Makati City, and wow! The very beautiful and very exclusive Limited Edition Brunswick Metro Cue by Predator sent by Brunswick Billiards was the cue of the day at the pool hall! Everyone who saw it complimented its looks, particularly how well the wrapless area and stainless steel butt cap with etched logos went well with the overall design of the cue!

Limited Edition Brunswick Metro Cue by Predator Graphic

The playabililty of the Ltd. Edition Brunswick Metro Cue is just as what you would expect of pool cues from Predator Cues – awesome! I did not have any difficulty with the wrapless Ltd. Edition Brunswick Metro pool cue. It actually felt nice gripping wood instead of the leather that I have been accustomed to. Balance is perfect too, and is comparable to that of my other Predator pool cues. The Ltd. Edition Brunswick Metro Cue came with a collarless 314 shaft, which is one of my all-time favorite shafts (even though it has been already been discontinued by Predator in lieu of the 314-2 and Z shafts). This is what made Predator a household name in the pool world – an advanced-technology shaft engineered to reduce cue ball deflection and improve accuracy and control. I never needed any adjustments on my play because I have been shooting with Predator cues for years now, with the Predator 2 being my favorite of the lot.

Limited Edition Brunswick Metro Cue by Predator Image

Rack after rack, set after set, I totally enjoyed playing that day using the Ltd. Edition Brunswick Metro Cue sent by Brunswick Billiards. The beautiful and exclusive Ltd. Edition Brunswick Metro cue handled well and feel was good. Had the guys try it, too! And everyone was all smiles and praises with it! Even the Coach of the Philippine Billiards Team, my good friend Edgar Boyet Asonto loved it! One Filipino pool player even offered $500 for it, which I politely declined. And oh! I successfully did a shut out run against a fellow pool player that day using the Ltd. Edition Brunswick Metro pool cue! No kidding!

Only 200 (numbered) Ltd. Edition Brunswick Metro Cue have been commissioned by Brunswick Billiards. Mine is number 171. Am I the first in the Philippines to have one? It’s possible. One of the firsts? Definitely! And I love it! And I kid you not!

Efren Reyes: King of the Billiard Hotshots!

Efren Bata Reyes Image

Here is very rare find on Filipino pool player Efren Bata Reyes, aka The Magician! "Efren Reyes: The Making of a Filipino Pocket Billiards Champion," by Yen Makabenta, was published in the February 10, 1983 issue of the Observer - the Sunday magazine of the Times Journal. It is an interesting and enjoyable read! And I kid you not! Much thanks to my online buddy, Cardinal Syn, for this great find! Maraming salamat kabayan!

From the magazine article:

"In the sometimes shadowy and long disorganized world of Philippine pocket billiards, finally an official champion is finally crowned and perhaps now the sport can develop and even prosper," Yen Makabenta. Yen Makabenta is now the President and Chairman of Raya Sports & Events, the Philippine organizing group of the 2007 World Pool Championship in Manila.

Francisco Django Bustamante and Corey Deuel in the Second IPT Challenge Match!

Francisco Django Bustamante-Corey Deuel Graphic

The International Pool Tour presents "East vs. West," the second IPT Challenge Match. The two countries that are represented in this challenge are both powerhouses in the world of pool. My good friend, Francisco Django Bustamante has won countless Championship Titles, locally and internationally, e.g., 1998 Player of the Year. Corey Deuel has also had an impressive career with multiple titles, e.g., UPA Pro Tour Championship and the US Open.

The United States has been one of the most dominant pool countries for over 100 years! However, the Philippines, which some say is the pool capital of the world, has produced many of the game's greatest pool players of the last 30 years, including, perhaps the greatest player to ever put a cue together - Efren Bata Reyes aka The Magician! Both countries are represented by one of their legendary players. The two pool players , Francisco Django Bustamante and Corey Deuel, competing in this match have radically different playing styles, and they are going to clash live, on a free broadcast on the International Pool Tour web site.

International Pool Tour Graphic

The live match will take place Wednesday, January 23rd, 2008 at 8pm (eastern). The game is 8-Ball, and the first player to win 15 games takes the match.

Viewers can watch the live stream absolutely free by being a Basic Member of the IPT web site. Register early so that viewers don't miss the beginning of the live broadcast. Registration is simple and takes just a minute. There are no costs to become a Basic Member. None whatsoever!

The show is just pure pool for anyone, pool player or fan, who wants to watch two famous champions represent their respective countries. And I kid you not! Who are you rooting for? Me? I'll give you one good guess!

And oh! Congratulations to Francisco Django Bustamante for placing 3rd and netting the $8,800 cash prize in the One Pocket Division of the 10th Annual Derby City Classic in Louisville, Kentucky! Wait! There's more! Our kababayan also won $20,000 as the DCC All Around Champion! Mabuhay ka kaibigan!

OB-1 Cue Shaft: Great Performance and Great Feel from Owen-Bunnel Inc.!

After a week of playing with the OB-1 cue shaft I received direct from Owen-Bunnell Inc., here are my thoughts on it. First, the guys at Owen-Bunnell Inc. packed the OB-1 cue shaft very well in a vacuumed plastic and bubble wrap. A close up inspection revealed no damage whatsoever. The box used for transport is made of heavy-duty cardboard held by heavy-duty packing tape at both ends. These guys sure know how to pack their stuff for transport!

The OB-1 shaft is definitely a slick one! IT IS very slick, friends! There’s no need to use baby powder on my hands! It’s already been a week of heavy playing already and the shaft’s slickness hasn’t changed a bit! The OB-1 cue shaft sent to me features a UniLoc with Black Collar joint, thus I paired it with my Predator 2 butt. I did all types off shooting with different degrees of force. The hit is remarkably solid! It exceptionally feels and sounds solid! No whippy or inconsistent feel! None whatsoever! Nil! Zit! Nada! I can’t exactly put my finger on it but the great feel generated by the OB-1 cue shaft makes me want to play better and be a better pool player! Shot after shot! Rack after rack! Set after set! Proof? I successfully run out the table on my first day using the OB-1 cue shaft – with much less effort! And oh! I successfully shut out a fellow club member (7-0) in a game of 9-balls! Would you believe that the guy belongs to a class one level higher than me? Yes, he does! No kidding!

Just like Predator’s 314, there is no need to compensate for deflection or squirt when using the OB-1 cue shaft. Of course, one still has to contend with the physics of the throw imparted on the object ball. But all in all, you just point, shoot, and the cue ball goes where you aim it! And I didn’t have to hit the cue ball as hard to get the same effect on spin and all, thus, increasing my accuracy and level of play! I pocket balls and realize my desired positional plays with much less effort than before! The cue ball follows, draws, and spins with much less effort! And this is very important if you play like me, i.e., for hours on end everyday!

With regards to the unique look of the laminated wood ferrule, some members of one of the clubs I belong to voiced their concerns on being distracted with it while shooting. That was before I let them shoot with my OB-1 cue shaft! They all did a complete 360 after shooting with it! Ha ha ha! I, for one, wasn’t bothered or distracted by it! Not one bit! Such thoughts never cross my mind when I was playing. You see, when I play, whether in tournaments or money matches, my thoughts center mostly on three things, i.e., the cue ball, the position of the object ball in relation to the cue ball, and the position of the other balls on the table. And when I go down for a shot, I focused on the area of the cue ball that I need to hit in order to pocket the object ball or put myself in positional play.

Much thanks to the great guys at Owen-Bunnell Inc. who sent me the OB-1 shaft! The OB-1 is one great cue shaft!
All in all, It’s all about great performance and great feel! The OB-1 cue shaft will definitely help improve any pool player’s game! And I kid you not!

"The AnitoKid loves his OB-1!"

Fr. Ed Panlilio is Inquirer's Filipino of the Year!

Father Ed Panlilio Image

On its 17th year, the Inquirer’s Filipino of the Year honors a living Filipino who made the most positive impact the past year. Eligible to vote were Inquirer editors and assistant editors. There were 44 voters this year. Fr. Ed Panlilio topped the nominees with 20 followed closely by Chief Justice Reynato Puno with 15 votes. Other nominees were Justices Teresita de Castro, Diosdado Peralta and Francisco Villaruz Jr. of the Sandiganbayan special division that tried and found ex-President Joseph Estrada guilty on two counts of plunder. (4); Sumilao farmers (2); Filipinas who made it to the summit of Mt. Everest (2) and Team Sinag (1), the country’s first solar car team that finished 11th out of 20 teams in the race of solar-powered cars in Australia.)

“Among” Ed Panlilio, priest turned plain-dealing prophet of hope, is the Inquirer’s Filipino of the Year for 2007. My thoughts? My views? I blogged about it almost a year ago, on May 21, 2007. And I kid you not! The link is here.

God bless, Father Ed!

About a week after the 2007 SEA Games was concluded, someone asked my good friend, Boyet Asonto, his thoughts on Rubilen Amit winning the gold. One of the questions centered on Rubilen's playing ability and whether or not she experiences nervousness or the like during tours and all. Without any hesitation, the Coach replied, "We all have that feeling. Every pool player has it. What is special about Rubilen is her ability to handle it well, channeling such such feeling into a positive force to deliver and bring home the bacon."

But not before my good friend, Coach Boyet Asonto, gave TV personality Ryan Ramos one of The AnitoKid's BlogCard! And the Coach didn't stop there! Mezz Cue for Sale Image

Pool players and fans, up for sale is my Mezz Cue TA-3 pool cue, the Kunihiko Takahashi Professional Model! This 19 oz (adjustable) pool cue features an ebony forearm with curly maple and ivorine points with abalone inlays surrounded by ebony. The butt is an exact reverse of the forearm. The wrap is solid black irish linen. And polished too! The Mezz Cue TA-3 also features sets of ebony and ivorine box rings surrounded by nickel silver. The joint is the Mezz United Joint. This cue comes with one Mezz Hybrid Pro II (United) shaft with Moori tip and free joint protectors.

Mezz cues are built to the highest standards utilizing some of the finest materials from the world over! Cues from Mezz are made with a commitment to total quality control at each step of the way. The best materials are carefully crafted using both traditional and modern methods.

Mezz Cue for Sale ImageDesigns are unique and unforgettable, ranging from the simplest shapes to complex and intricate patterns. The United Joint is Mezz’s newest innovation in cue joint design and is touted as the most solid system available. It is said that the novel construction ensures precise butt shaft alignment every time, all the time. It reduces the shaft vibration after impact, thus, making it easier for you to control the ball.

Mezz Cue for Sale GraphicMezz cues are the number 1 cues made in Japan. In their price range, Mezz cues are some of the best cues in the world for their exceptional quality and playability. Each design has very limited quantity of cues. Mezz cues are not just great for playing - they are great for collection, too!

Mezz Cue for Sale ImageI changed the shaft, from the standard one that came along with the TA-3, to The Mezz Hybrid Pro II (United) shaft, which is the most expensive and technologically-advanced shaft currently offered by Mezz Cues. The Hybrid Pro II shaft is made from the marrying of carbon fibre and hard maple, resulting in a shaft 30% stronger than conventional shafts without sacrificing the flexibility of the shaft. Like most high-ended shafts are, notwithstanding custom shafts, it is a low deflection shaft. Thus, it's like having an added bonus to this great buy!

Mezz Cue for Sale ImageThis particular pool cue for sale, Mezz Cue TA-3 - Kunihiko Takahashi Pro Model, is slightly used and is in very good condition. No dings, pings, or what have yous! I have used it for about 5 weeks before I stored it in my pool cue collection room - that is, after getting my Bebot Bautista custom cue! :) The Mezz Cue TA-3 plays great! And lucky, too! It was the cue that I used when i won one of my biggest money matches in the metro - and against one very good opponent to boot! My friends and all know how much I'm into pool cues and exotic woods. Most of my pool cues are in the high-end range, and let me tell you this, this one is one of the top-of-line cues offered by Mezz Cues! No kidding!

Mezz Cue for Sale GraphicThe reason why I'm selling my Mezz Cue TA-3? I'm going to use the money for another custom pool cue. Period. No nothing. Nada. It's just that. Plain and simple. This is a very fine piece of pool equipment friends! You have my word on that! It's The AnitoKid Guarantee!

The Hybrid Pro II shaft is made from the marrying of carbon fibre and hard maple, resulting in a shaft 30% stronger than conventional shafts without sacrificing the flexibility of the shaft. Yes, the Hybrid Pro II is the top-of-the-line shaft currently offered by Mezz Cue! Check out their official site for yourself, friends!

Mezz Cue for Sale ImageMy apologies for the fuzziness of the pics! Took them using a mobile phone camera. Believe you me, this pool cue for sale is a great buy! It's looks brand new! The Mezz Cue TA-3, which is one of Mezz Cues' high-end pool cues, currently has a list price of $1580! And how much am I selling it? Take a guess! I'm selling it at half the price y'all! Yes, you heard it right! I'm selling my slightly used, and in very good condition, Mezz Cue TA-3 pool cue for just $750 (Php30,700!) What! That can't be right? Yes, it is true! Asking price is just $750! The new owner of this TA-3 is going to be one happy 'ombre! It goes without saying that serious offers will be seriously considered. And I kid you not!

Jose Amang Parica: The Derby City Classic, the Filipino Invasion, and Filipino Pool Players!

Derby City Classic GraphicRound Three of the 2008 Derby City Classic Banks Division is complete and round four is underway. A number of Filipino pool players beat their respective opponents in the first round of this grueling event, which was participated in by 450 pool players! The Filipino pool players I'm talking about include Efren Bata Reyes, aka The Magician over David Williams, Alex Pagulayan, aka The Lion over Steve Hickman, Rodolfo Luat, aka Boy Samson over Danny Smith, and Jose Parica, aka Amang over Niels Feijen.

And oh! Here's a read I just found on Jose Amang Parica Jr., the Filipino pool player who initiated The Filipino Invasion. The article was written in May 2003 by my kabayan,
Val. G. Abelgas. IT IS an interesting read! And I kid you not! Enjoy!

Jose Amang Parica Graphic

Filipino pool player Jose “Amang” Parica had to pull a stool every time it was his turn to make a shot when he first played billiards at his father’s billiard hall in Blumentritt, Manila back in the Philippines. Amang Parica was just 7-years old when he first struck a cue ball with a cue that was much longer than he was, on a billiard table that was just as high as he was. Parica literally grew up with a cue in his hands.

Forty-three years and more than 100 championships later, Jose Amang Parica is still literally living in the world of billiards, still slugging it out with the best of them. Less than a week ago, Amang Parica proved once and for all that he is still one of the best players in the world, in a sport he has dominated in the Philippines in decades, and in the world for more than a decade. He won the $40,000 First Western Open 9-Ball Championship at the Crystal Park Casino and Hotel in Compton, beating Francisco Django Bustamante in a thrilling finals, 15-12.

At 50, Jose Parica should have been playing in the seniors tour, if there is one, but he continues to dominate much younger players from the Philippines, the United States, and the world. Amang Parica sharpened his skills in the billiard halls his father owned in Blumentritt and in Sta. Cruz in Manila. Soon, he was beating much older guys. He had won all the tournaments that had to be won in the Philippines, but Amang felt he still did not earn the recognition he felt he deserved. Finally, in 1975, he got his break.

Jose Amang Parica Image

A Japanese billiard player and promoter was looking for a Filipino player to compete in a tournament in Japan, and went looking for a guy known only as “Amang.” Word got around fast, and soon Jose Amang Parica was on his way to Japan for his first major tournament outside the Philippines. By then, Parica was already 25. He bagged fourth place in the Tokyo International Open that year, and got invited to the tournament every year.

In 1976, Parica, hoping to get a better deal for Filipino billiard players, organized the Philippine Pocket Billiards Association. He became its first president. In 1978, Amang had enough sponsors to compete in his first-ever tournament in the United States, the World Open Straight Pool Championship. He was the only Filipino in the tournament and got the attention of the billiard world by placing in a tie for 9th to 12th places.

Jose Amang Parica competed under the Men’s Professional Billiards Association for years, but did not win a U.S. title until 1986, when he won the World Open 9-Ball Child Cypress in Lexington. Amang followed it up with a victory in the World Classic Cup title in Aurora, Illinois. In 1987, Parica went back to the Philippines to display the new skills he had learned from the world’s best players, and to encourage Filipino players to compete in the prestigious and financially-rewarding U.S. billiard circuit. Jose Parica had blazed the trail, and had actually paved the path with gold by gaining respect for Filipino pool players. He wanted other Filipinos to follow the trail to world success.

Soon, Filipino pool players Efren Bata Reyes, Francisco Django Bustamante, Rodolfo Luat, and Leonardo Dodong Andam joined Amang Parica in lording it over the American circuit. Without realizing it, Parica had led what American billiard aficionados call the “Filipino Invasion.”

Jose Parica Graphic

Jose Amang Parica has won close to 100 tournaments in the U.S., 13 in Japan, and three in the Philippines (all Philippine Open in 1980, 1989 and 1992). In 1988, Parica dominated the Japanese circuit, winning the championship in eight of nine tournaments he competed in, and placing second in the only tournament he did not win. The same year, he won the biggest and richest tournament ever by beating arch rival Efren Bata Reyes in the finals. The tournament, played in Tokyo, had 900 players and had a total purse of $900,000. That year, Amang Parica had total winnings of $289,000.

He won three more tournaments in 1989, but the star of Efren Bata Reyes was beginning to shine brighter than his. As The Magician began to shine, Amang Parica began to fade. In 1994, Parica married Aurora and retired from active competition. He had a lot of savings from his billiard earnings, and he decided he did not want to travel constantly anymore.

Jose Amang Parica was content with playing billiards privately and wading in the pool of his 5-bedroom house in West Covina, until one day, while they were in Las Vegas, Nevada, Aurora overheard a Filipino say Efren Bata Reyes is the best Filipino player ever, and that The Magician could beat any Filipino, including Amang Parica. Efren Reyes had been named Player of the Year in 1995.

Aurora told Amang what she heard, and convinced him to play competitively again, just to prove that he is not yet over the hill. Jose Amang Parica took it as a challenge and as a go-signal from his wife to resume his suspended billiards career. In late 1996, Amang Parica resumed playing in the U.S. circuit. He lost twice to Efren Reyes that year, and also lost to American ace Johnny Archer, who emerged Player of the Year in 1996. But Amang still managed to win four tournaments that year, against Efren Reyes’ three.

Jose Parica Image

Jose Amang Parica showed his fighting heart by coming back in 1997 to beat Efren Bata Reyes six in a row, and Johnny Archer seven times. He won five tournaments that year and emerged No. 1 in world ratings. Amang Parica proved he was still among the best in the world by being chosen Player of the Year in 1997 by three award-giving bodies — the Billiards Magazine, Billiards Digest, and the Camel Pro-Billiards Series, the richest and most prestigious circuit in the U.S.

Jose Parica and Efren Reyes faded again in 1998, as the rising Francisco Django Bustamante dominated the circuit, by winning three of the Camel Circuit’s eight legs, and placing second in two. Django Bustamante won the Player of the Year honors that year.

After three tournaments in the Camel Circuit, Parica is running ninth with 130 points, while Bustamante is sixth with 170 points. Efren Bata Reyes, who missed one tournament when he represented the Philippines in Brunei, was way below with 80 points. Reyes, however, is expected to come back strong after winning the World 9-Ball Open in London in early August.

Jose Amang Parica finished in a tie for 7th and 8th in the first leg in Kansas, 13th in Atlanta, and 32nd in Las Vegas, which Efren Reyes missed.

With his convincing victory in the Compton event, where six of the seven Filipinos who competed finished in the money list, Jose Parica is one of the players to watch in the next leg at Nashville, Tennessee starting Sept. 14, and later at the prestigious U.S. Open in Houston, Texas on Sept. 25-26.

After 43 years of playing billiards and more than 100 titles tucked under his belt, Jose Amang Parica doesn’t even look close to retiring soon. You can look deep into his eyes, and you’ll probably see the 8 and 9 balls inside.

Again, much thanks to Mr. Val. G. Abelgas for the article!

Filipino Pool Player Efren Bata Reyes: Just How Great Is He?

Just how great is Efren Bata Reyes, aka The Magician? Some say that The Kid is the most celebrated and charismatic cue artist ever to wield a pool cue. Others believe that the Billiards Congress of America Hall of Famer is a living legend. Countless people, both pool players and fans alike, speak about Efren's deep sense of humility, to the point that it is almost unbelievable! In addition, the billiards icon has never let the countless tournaments and competitions he has won nor the endless awards and recognitions he has been bestowed upon on get into his head. These and more are what the Filipino pool player from Pampanga is all about! Efren Bata Reyes - simply the greatest pool player ever! And I kid you not!

The 2008 Derby City Classic Pool Tournament!

Derby City Classic Graphic

Yee-haa! The 2008 Derby City Classic is just around the corner! Named after the famous horse race, the Louisville, Kentucky-based Derby City Classic pool tournament features round-the-clock gambling action. It is known as the biggest pool tournament in terms of gambling action, with that unmistakable 24/7 excitement that the game of billiards is known for the world over! It will run from January 4 to 12, 2008.

What is great about the Derby City Classic are the specially appointed action rooms, where both fans and players, audience and gamblers observe and wait for opportunities to watch live matches and make money on potential and actual match-ups. Negotiations about weight and handicapping (partida) can last for hours or days before the first rack of a big-money game is even played! And more often than not, the stake money is posted on the table lamp – just like old times y’all!

It pays to know your way and who you know when one is at the Derby City Classic. Why so? Well, wouldn’t you want to know where the action is, grab a piece of the action, and make a ton of money on the side? I would! Moreover, side actions generate more than the actual table bet! No kidding! There are also non-stop $1,000 mini-tournaments that are played on 40 tables! The heart-pounding action doesn’t stop there! Multi-player ring games are also featured in a special TV arena!

Rodolfo Luat With AnitoKid GraphicThe AnitoKid with Rodolfo Luat

The nine-day Derby City Classic pool tournament will feature hundreds of top professionals. These include Filipino pool players and their international counterparts from the US, Europe, and Asia. I know my buddies Francisco “Django” Bustamante and Rodolfo Luat, aka Boy Samson, will be there. By the way, Rodolfo Luat uses pool cues made by Pat Diveney, a custom cuemaker in eastern Iowa who has developed a great following in that area. And believe me, Pat's cues are stunningly beautiful!

Efren Bata Reyes Graphic

Filipino pool player Jose “Amang” Parica is also expected to be there! Jose Parica, who is the first Filipino pool player to travel outside the Philippines and play in the international circuit, is the Derby City Classic’s champion in 9-Ball Banks (2001), One Pocket (2003), and All-Around (2002). And who would want to miss out on Efren “Bata” Reyes, aka The Magician! Did you know that Efren “Bata” Reyes, who is the best player to ever wield a pool cue, holds a number, wait let me rephrase that, holds several championships in the Derby City Classic? Yes, he does! These include championships in One Pocket for the years 1999, 2004, 2005, 2006, and 2007! And Efren did not play in the event from 2000 to 2003, thus the beloved billiards icon is a perfect 5 for 5! I’m not done yet! The soft-spoken Efren Bata Reyes also took the 2005 Championship in the event’s 9-ball competition! And the Philippines’ favorite son is also the Derby City Classic’s All-Around Champion for the years 1999, 2004, 2005, and 2007! HE IS THAT GOOD, dear readers! Good luck to all my kababayans who will compete in the prestigious 2008 Derby City Classic! I’m betting my bottom dollar on you guys!

All in all, the Derby City Classic represents that great age of pool, kinda similar to what you see in the motion picture The Hustler. And it’s not about gambling, mind you! It’s not even about the money, my friends! The Derby City Classic is all about the drama and the excitement - about putting something on the line and realizing that one-of-a-kind rush which one can only get from playing pool! And I kid you not!
