Thus, the Philippine pool and billiards scene faces an immediate concern – the rise of Taiwan as a world pool power and the need to find the heir apparent to two of the sports’ greatest players, i.e., Efren Bata Reyes and Francisco Django Bustamante. In light of these developments, the $25,000 San Miguel Beer-Quezon City 9-Ball Championship will be held on March 17-19, 2008 at the Trinoma Mall in Quezon City. We are going grassroots on this one! Yee-haa! And I sincerely believe that going grassroots is a positive step towards addressing such a concern, and realizing a true solution to such! Now, if we could have billiards integrated in the curriculum – now, that would be something! Think about it! Ponder on it! It is one very beautiful thought! And I kid you not!
With regards to the SMB-QC 9-Ball Championship, the remaining berths will be filled by players from three qualifying tournaments that are slated from March 14 to 16, 2008, at Paeng’s Bowling and Billiards Center, Robinsons Galleria, Ortigas, Quezon City. All successful qualifiers will join the seeded Filipino pool players to the main draw. These include Efren Reyes (The Magician), Francisco Bustamante (Django), Alex Pagulayan (The Lion), Ronnie Alcano (The Volcano), Dennis Orcollo (Robocop), Roberto Gomez, Lee Van Corteza (Van Van), Joven Bustamante, Gandy Valle (Asian Games medalist), international pool players Rodolfo Luat (Boy Samson), Warren Kiamco and Ramil Gallego, and Rubilen Amit, aka Bingkay (SEA Games Gold Medalist and 2007 Amway Women’s World 9-Ball Championship 1st Runner-up).
The event, which has $10,000 as the top prize, is organized by Puyat Sports, Bugsy Promotions, and Negros Billiards Stable. It is sponsored by the Philippine Amusements and Gaming Corp. (PAGCOR), Trinoma, Philippine Star, Ayala Malls, and Philippine Poker Tour (PPT).
